CS2 Graffiti — Complete History

Graffiti was introduced to CS:GO on October 6, 2016, bringing back the beloved spray paint feature from earlier Counter-Strike games (CS 1.6 and Source). References to graffiti were first found in the game files on May 31, 2016 — about four months before the public release. Each graffiti spray has 50 charges and each charge lasts 7 minutes on the surface, with a 45-second cooldown between sprays (or until the next round, whichever is shorter).

Graffiti boxes include community-designed artwork and Valve-created sprays. Sprays come in monochrome and color variants, with color graffiti being rarer. Some designs were directly recycled from older Counter-Strike games — the classic "Smiley" became "Still Happy," the "Lambda" logo returned, and the "8ball1" became "8-Ball." Tournament graffiti (unlimited-use team sprays for Viewer Pass holders) was available for Major Championships from ELEAGUE Atlanta 2017 through BLAST Paris 2023, and was discontinued with the first CS2 Major (PGL Copenhagen 2024).

Tips & Information

  • Graffiti sprays can be applied to walls and surfaces during CS2 matches using the spray keybind (default: T).
  • Each sealed graffiti has 50 charges when first opened — once used up, it disappears from your inventory.
  • Sprays remain visible on surfaces for about 7 minutes or until a new round starts, depending on game mode.
  • Color rarity tiers range from common (monochrome) to rare (full-color, multi-color designs).
  • Some graffiti designs reference iconic CS moments like the "jumping double from cold" or crosshair patterns.
  • Players typically receive random graffiti sprays as weekly drop rewards from leveling up their profile.

Trivia & Fun Facts

  • Graffiti was a spiritual successor to the spray paint in CS 1.6 and Source, where players could upload custom images as sprays — CS:GO sprays are curated to prevent abuse.
  • Getting a kill grants a bonus spray use that bypasses the 45-second cooldown, letting you spray over your victim immediately.
  • An exploit was discovered where graffiti could be sprayed on transparent surfaces like glass, making them visible from both sides.
  • Many original graffiti designs are direct callbacks to older CS games: "Still Happy" is a remake of the classic "Smiley" spray, and "8-Ball" recreates the old "8ball1" design.
  • Tournament graffiti featuring Major Championship branding was available from ELEAGUE Atlanta 2017 through BLAST Paris 2023. It was not included at PGL Copenhagen 2024, the first CS2 Major.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CS2 graffiti?

Graffiti items in CS2 are spray patterns that you can apply to surfaces during matches. They function like virtual spray paint — press the spray key to leave your design on a wall or floor. Graffiti is purely cosmetic and does not affect gameplay. Designs range from community art to Valve-created patterns across various rarity tiers.

Do graffiti sprays run out?

Yes. Every graffiti spray in CS2 has exactly 50 charges. Once you've sprayed it 50 times across matches, the item is consumed and disappears from your inventory. There is no free or default unlimited graffiti — if you have no sealed graffiti in your inventory, you simply cannot spray.

How do I get graffiti in CS2?

Graffiti can be obtained as weekly drop rewards, from graffiti boxes (purchased or found), through the Steam Community Market, or earned through operations and events. In our simulator, you can open all graffiti boxes for free to see every spray pattern available.
