CS2 Sticker Capsules — Complete History
The first sticker capsule — Sticker Capsule — was introduced on February 5, 2014, as part of one of CS:GO's earliest cosmetic updates. Community Sticker Capsule 1 followed shortly after, featuring community-created designs chosen through the Steam Workshop. Since then, Valve has released well over 100 sticker capsules across community collections and Major tournament series.
Major tournament sticker capsules are released for every CS:GO and CS2 Major Championship, containing team logos and player autographs. These are further divided into categories like Challengers, Contenders, Legends, and Champions based on tournament stage. Tournament stickers are among the most traded items in CS2's economy — rare Katowice 2014 Holo stickers can sell for thousands of dollars on the Steam Market.
Sticker rarity variants have evolved over the years. Early capsules featured Holo and Foil variants. Gold stickers debuted on souvenir packages at PGL Krakow 2017 and became unboxable in standard capsules around the 2020 RMR and PGL Stockholm 2021. Glitter stickers arrived later at PGL Antwerp 2022, replacing the Foil tier in modern capsules. The specific variant you receive is determined by the capsule's drop rates — Holo and Foil (or Glitter in modern capsules) are rarer than base stickers, while Gold stickers are the rarest of all.
Tips & Information
- Stickers can be applied to any weapon skin — up to 5 stickers per weapon. Since the February 2024 "A Call to Arms" update, stickers use free placement and can be rotated and positioned anywhere on the weapon.
- Once applied, stickers can be scraped (faded) or removed entirely — but a removed sticker is gone forever.
- Holo stickers have a holographic shine effect, Foil stickers have a metallic texture, Glitter stickers sparkle, and Gold stickers have a premium gold finish.
- Katowice 2014 Holo stickers (iBUYPOWER, Titan, etc.) are among the most expensive items in CS2 history.
- Community sticker capsules feature fan-designed artwork voted on through the Steam Workshop.
- Tournament stickers are only available during Major events — once the event ends, they become limited supply.
Trivia & Fun Facts
- Scraping stickers reveals hidden messages on some designs — fan favorites include "Welcome to Hell," "T-REKT," and "Hello I'm a Smurf."
- Sticker rarity tiers include High Grade (Blue), Remarkable (Purple), Exotic (Pink), and Extraordinary (Red). The Howling Dawn sticker is the only Contraband-tier sticker in the game — it was reclassified alongside the M4A4 Howl in May 2014 when Valve removed both items from the drop pool after discovering stolen artwork.
- EMS Katowice 2014 was the first CS:GO Major to feature sticker capsules. The iBUYPOWER (Holo) from that event is often called the most expensive virtual sticker ever made.
- The Lenticular variant creates a 3D depth-shifting effect similar to a lenticular trading card. It's extremely rare and currently only found in the 10 Year Birthday Sticker Capsule.
- Sticker capsule types include Community capsules (opened with a key), Tournament capsules (purchased directly), and In-game Shop capsules (bought from the store).
- A weapon with 4+ expensive Katowice 2014 Holo stickers applied can be worth more than many real-world cars.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are CS2 sticker capsules?
Sticker capsules are containers that hold decorative CS2 stickers. Each capsule contains a set of sticker designs across rarity tiers. Stickers can be applied to weapon skins as customization. Variants include base, Holo, Foil, Glitter, and Gold — with rarer variants being more valuable and harder to unbox.
What are the most valuable CS2 stickers?
The most valuable stickers are from the Katowice 2014 Major. The iBUYPOWER (Holo) Katowice 2014 is legendary — worth thousands of dollars on its own, and weapons with this sticker applied can sell for tens of thousands. Other valuable stickers include Titan (Holo) Katowice 2014, Reason Gaming (Holo) Katowice 2014, and various Gold autographs from popular players.
What is the difference between Holo, Foil, Glitter, and Gold stickers?
Each variant has a unique visual effect. Holo stickers display a rainbow holographic shift. Foil stickers have a reflective metallic surface. Glitter stickers (first introduced at Antwerp 2022 in CS:GO) feature a sparkling texture. Gold stickers have a premium gold finish and are typically the rarest. The variant is determined randomly when opening a capsule based on the capsule's drop rates.
Can I open sticker capsules for free?
In-game, some sticker capsules require a key or can be purchased directly from the store. In our simulator, you can open every sticker capsule completely free with real drop rates. Test your luck across community capsules and Major tournament capsules — see if you can unbox rare Holo and Gold variants without spending real money.
How many stickers can I apply to a weapon?
You can apply up to 5 stickers to each weapon skin in CS2. Since the February 2024 "A Call to Arms" update, stickers use free placement — you can rotate and position them anywhere on the weapon model instead of being limited to fixed spots. Once applied, they can be scraped (making them appear worn) or completely removed — but removed stickers are destroyed permanently and cannot be recovered.
