About the Shadow Case

Released on September 18, 2015 with the "Shadow Boxing" update, Shadow Case is one of the cleanest single-hook cases in the game. It exists in player memory for one reason: this is where Shadow Daggers started.

That gives the case a niche, but it is a real niche. If you like the dual-blade draw and inspect animation, Shadow is the source case, and that is enough to keep it recognizable long after other mid-2015 cases blur together.

Trivia

  • The weapons selected for the Shadow Case were announced prior to the actual skins' choosing via a steam community post. This is the first time this was done publicly.
  • This also allowed skin authors to solicit directly to be included in the upcoming case, much like what was already being done with operations.
  • Originally, the G3SG1 was going to be a covert weapon in this case but was later swapped with the USP-S.
  • On the M249 | Nebula Crusader, the six-digit score counter shown is located at the exact same location where the StatTrak™ counter is on the M249. The score counter would be perfectly covered by the StatTrak™ counter on a StatTrak™ version of the skin.

Key Facts

  • Knives: 0.26% drop rate
  • StatTrak™ variants: 10% chance on eligible tiers
  • Top item: ★ Shadow Daggers | Case Hardened — value depends entirely on the pattern; rare “Blue Gem” patterns trade far above the listed market
  • Expected ROI: 34.5% ($1.86 EV per $5.41 opening incl. key)
  • Every opening is independent — past results don't change future odds

FAQ

Why is Shadow Case still recognizable at a glance?
Because it is the Shadow Daggers case. The dual-blade animation is such a specific gimmick that the whole case still feels instantly distinct.
What items are in the Shadow Case?
The Shadow Case contains 29 skins across 5 rarity tiers: 13 ★ Rare Special, 2 Covert, 3 Classified, 4 Restricted, 7 Mil-Spec. The rare special tier includes 1 knive across 13 finishes.
How do I open the Shadow Case for free?
Use the simulator on this page. It runs Valve's published drop probabilities, so the unboxing pattern matches the real case. You can also see the expected ROI before committing real money to it. No login or download.
Are the Shadow Case drop rates realistic?
Yes. The simulator uses the drop probabilities Valve publishes for CS2 containers. For the Shadow Case, that means knives at 0.26% per opening.
What are the knives drop rates in the Shadow Case?
Knives land at 0.26% per opening — about 1 in 385. The Shadow Case has 1 knive across 13 finishes, so the odds of pulling one specific finish are noticeably lower than the headline number suggests.
What is the most valuable skin in the Shadow Case?
The ★ Shadow Daggers | Case Hardened is the headline pull, but its real value depends on the blue-pattern percentage rather than the listed Steam Market price. Rare "Blue Gem" patterns from this case can trade for many multiples of the average listed price.
When was the Shadow Case added to CS2?
The Shadow Case was added to the game on September 18, 2015, alongside the "Shadow Boxing" update. It is classified as Container Series #80. It replaced the Falchion Case as the newest case.
How much does the Shadow Case cost?
The Shadow Case costs around $2.92 on the Steam Market as of May. Add $2.49 for the key and each opening totals $5.41. You can try it risk-free in our simulator before buying.
What is the expected ROI of the Shadow Case?
34.5% — meaning a $5.41 opening (case + key) returns about $1.86 on average. Most value is locked behind the rare special items — the average opening returns less than cost.
Does the Shadow Case have StatTrak™ items?
Yes. Non-special skins can drop as StatTrak™ at a 10% chance. The variant tracks in-game kills and usually trades at a premium over the standard version.
